What causes Breasts to sag?

At puberty, hormones cause breast development to reach a womanly form making it ready for motherhood. In pregnancy, there is growth in the breast gland tissue for lactation but post pregnancy again this tissue is decreased and replaced by fat tissue. During adult life, the breast gland tissue with each age is replaced by fat tissue, owing to again the hormonal changes till and after the woman reaches postmenopausal period. And during this whole period, gravity also affects the breast position one day at a time. Hormones also have an effect on the skin quality making it more thin and lose its tone.

Coopers ligaments, aka suspensory ligaments, are the structural support inside the breast which keeps the breast tissue adhered to the skin over the breast and to the muscles under the breast. This up and down growth of breast tissue and its replacement by fat tissue along with gravity over time affects these coopers ligaments. They loose their tone, become lax and cause drooping of both the breast tissue and the skin over it. This is called as sagging of breasts, also called as ‘Breast ptosis”.

These changes can cause discomfort or have an impact on one’s self-esteem, and embarrasement in day to day life. This can be solved by a simple Plastic surgery procedure called as Breast Lift.

Breast Lift surgery

What is breast lift surgery?

Breast lift surgery, is also called as Mastopexy. It is a surgery, which address sagging or drooping of breasts. This surgery includes removal of excess breast tissue if any, reshaping the breast tissue and positioning it and the nipple – areola to a more youthful and normal position over the chest.

Woman who are worried about the loss of breast firmness and loose skin and who wish to achieve a youthful looking breast shape undergo breast lift surgery.

  • Are your breasts unequal in droopiness?
  • Do your nipples fall below your breasts?

Then you should look into breast lift surgery.

Breast undergoes many changes during a woman’s lifetime. Each major landmark of a woman’s life be it puberty, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and the natural aging process, take a toll on the breasts. This causes change in the feel of the breast, loss of volume of the breast, loss of skin elasticity and drooping of the breast. These changes can be reversed to give the breast the shape, the feel and the youthness they deserve. And this is done by Breast lift surgery.

What are the benefits of breast lift surgery?

Breast lift surgery reverses the changes casued by hormones and gravity on the breast tissue. This leads to

  • Decrease in the physical discomfort due to droopy breast such as neck and shoulder pain

What is the amount of Breast Ptosis needed for breast lift?

Breast Ptosis in its various degrees is defined by the anatomic level of the nipple in relation to the inframammary fold,  according to Regnault, into :

Normal : Nipple is above the level of the inframammary fold (the breast fold)

Minimal Ptosis : Nipple is at or just lower to the inframammary fold

Moderate ptosis : Nipple is 1-3 cm lower to the inframammary fold

Severe ptosis : Nipple is > 3 cm lower to the inframammary fold

Glandular / Pseudoptosis : The nipple is above the level of inframammary fold but the majority of the breast tissue is below it, giving it a false droop.

Any moderate or more amount of ptosis can be corrected by Breast Lift surgery. Now this again depends on the amount of actual breast tissue present in the breast and the quality of the skin over it. Most woman feel that the volume of the breast is good for them, but the skin is loose and lax, while others may feel that volume of the breast is less, skin tone is okayish but the breast is droopy. Both these woman can undergo a breast lift surgery.
